Creating A Calorie Deficit To Lose Weight

What is a calorie deficit and why is it important to help you lose weight? Most people have been on some form of diet and have a good understanding of calorie restriction and how it effects your body.

You eat less and you lose weight, right? Most people don't know there's a basic equation you can use to not only control your weight, but to also help burn off body fat.

Everyone has a specific eating behavior that your body begins to understand. It creates a weight maintenance factor that means your body gets a certain amount of calories each day that allows it to maintain your weight without gaining or losing. It's when you deviate from that weight maintenance that creates weight gain or weight loss.

If you're trying to lose weight then what you want to do is create a calorie deficit, which means your body isn't getting enough calories to maintain your current weight. When that happens your body starts to burn through excess body fat and you start to get thinner.

What Is A Calorie Deficit?

In it's most basic form a calorie deficit is when your body is getting fewer calories than it needs to maintain its current weight. To keep a steady 190 lbs for men, without gaining or losing weight, you need to consume about 2500 calories each day. If you eat considerably more, you gain weight, if you eat considerably less you lose weight.

The magic number to lose one pound of weight is 3500 calories. That means you need to create a 3500 calorie deficit per week to lose one pound of body weight each and every week. So how do you get a calorie deficit?

You can either eat less, by reducing your total weekly calories by 3500 which is a reduction of 500 calories per day. So if you're eating 2500 calories/day, you would need to reduce your calories to 2000 per day to start losing weight consistently. Or you can burn off calories through exercise.

The best way to get your body burning off fat is by doing both. In the example above you could reduce your daily calories to 2200 and include exercise that burns off 200 calories per day. That would get you to the magical 500 calorie deficit per day, which would burn off about one pound per week.

The greater the calorie deficit the faster you lose weight.
